Tap Dance: The Blues Project
I just saw two of the best tap dancers in the world perform in a touring show called "The Blues Project" at Yerba Buena Arts Center. Derick Grant and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards are leading a gifted company of young dancers on a tour through the blues. All American originals with choreography by Michelle Dorrance. Whoever said "tap is dead" hasn't seen these hoofers lay it down in The Blues Project. The featured band is led by versatile singer-songwriter-guitarist Toshi Reagon, who lays the musical foundation with her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country and folk.
A dynamic evening of rhythm, original live music, explosive energy, and raw emotion, The Blues Project is a collaboration of today's best tap artists, musicians, and choreographers. Together, Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, and Toshi Reagon breathe fresh energy into traditional tap dance, and with that, a nod to its historical origins.
